Service Overcomes Traditional and Virtual Desktop Challenges; Introduces $1/Day Desktops

Chelmsford, MA – Desktone, Inc., the pioneer of Desktops as a Service, today announced that it has entered into the Partner Network with Rackspace® Hosting (NYSE: RAX), the world’s leading specialist in the hosting and cloud computing industry, to provide the Desktone Cloud, a new service offering the industry’s most cost-effective and easy to deploy cloud-based desktops.

This new relationship adds value to clients and increases targeted exposure and brand awareness for both companies.  By combining Rackspace’s enterprise-class data center with Desktone’s secure platform, customers can quickly benefit from virtual desktops at a cost that is significantly lower than those typically associated with virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) and traditional desktop environments. Desktone eliminates the high upfront capital investment needed with VDI and the ongoing capital expenses of managing complex environments by providing the virtual desktop environment in the cloud. Unlike other offerings, Desktone offers a true cloud-based desktop with zero upfront costs, no software/hardware to deploy, and flexible deployment and pricing options.

“Enterprises are telling us they want a fast, easy way to realize the flexibility, cost savings and security promises of cloud computing and virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI). By teaming with Rackspace, one of the world’s leading cloud providers, we’re enabling businesses to leverage the scale, reliability, security and global distribution of the Rackspace data center footprint. Together, we’re making it simple for enterprises to quickly transition to an innovative, yet low-risk, ‘as-a-service’ offering. Not only is Desktone Cloud priced much lower than other offerings, with our Fast Start trial customers can experience virtual desktops in a matter of hours,” said Peter McKay, CEO of Desktone.

“We’re excited to work with Desktone in offering customers a very cost-effective and easy to deploy desktop. With the Desktone Cloud, organizations get the advantages of desktop virtualization without the hassles of upfront capital costs and deployment complexities, and can rapidly provision desktops, scaling up or down as their needs dictate,” said Robert Fuller, V.P. Worldwide Channel Sales at Rackspace.

“Enterprises want to take advantage of virtual desktops, but are stymied by cost and complexity. With its attractive price point and easy on-ramp, the Desktone Cloud lowers the barrier to entry. It makes cloud-based virtual desktops extremely feasible, particularly for companies that want to leverage the cloud’s flexibility for mobile, contract and outsourced workers,” said Rachel Chalmers, Research Director, Infrastructure Management, The 451 Group.

The Desktone Cloud service is powered by the Desktone Platform 3, the industry’s only purpose-built product for delivering desktops in the cloud (see separate press release announced today). The service is fast and easy to implement. Customers simply convert their desktop workloads to workloads on Rackspace-hosted servers and pay a monthly per-desktop fee.

Available immediately from Desktone, the Desktone Cloud offering is priced starting at $30/desktop/month. Organizations can be up and running with the new service in just days. Companies can evaluate how easy it is to deploy virtual desktops via the Desktone Cloud by signing up for its free, seven-day trial. For more information, go to
